In one of the most emotional victories seen on the high-roller circuit this year, Hong Kong poker ambassador Danny Tang burst into tears after clinching the $100,000 buy-in Triton Super High Roller Series Main Event in Montenegro, banking a career-best $3,522,000 and reinforcing his status as the #1 player on the Hong Kong all-time money list.
The 33-year-old defeated Austrian opponent Klemens Roiter heads-up after a dramatic final table that featured Poker Hall of Famer Patrik Antonius, German standout Leon Sturm, and Chinese high-stakes crusher Ye Wang. The field of 159 entries created a massive $15,900,000 prize pool — one of the largest in Triton history.
A Rocky Road to the Top
Tang’s path to glory was anything but smooth. He held the chip lead during play but surrendered a large portion of his stack after an ambitious bluff against Ye Wang backfired badly. Down to just seven big blinds, most players would have mentally checked out — but not Tang.
“When I went down to seven BBs after bluffing Wang Ye earlier, I was, ‘Urgh, man, I blew another chip lead,'” Tang said in his winner’s interview. “But then I got lucky, I kept myself together, and kept fighting. I said to myself, ‘If I can double up once, I’m in this.’ And eventually cards went my way.”
That resilience paid off. In the decisive heads-up hand, Tang limp-called on the button with ace-jack as Roiter jammed with ace-seven. The board ran clean, and the title was Tang’s — completing a redemption arc that started when he finished runner-up in this exact event back in 2019 to Bryn Kenney.
What It Means for Asian Poker
This result is a landmark moment for APAC poker. Tang now sits atop the Hong Kong all-time money list with over $38.8 million in Hendon Mob earnings, and this win adds to a growing wave of elite Asian talent dominating the world’s biggest stages.
The Triton final table itself told that story clearly. Ye Wang of China finished third for $1,636,000, while Malaysia’s Kiat Lee collected $356,000 for a 9th-place finish. When you add Tang’s victory to Adrian Mateos’ $6,370,000 win in the $200,000 Triton Invitational earlier in the same series, it was a festival that will be remembered as one of the most star-studded of the decade.
Tang was visibly overcome after the final card was dealt, burying his head in his hands amid the fog and strobe lights of the celebration. He saved some of his warmest words for Triton founder Paul Phua: “Triton is in my blood, in my veins. I love Triton. My career would not have been what it is without Mr Paul and the whole Triton family.”
Big Month of Poker Just Getting Started
The Triton Montenegro festival is just the warm-up act. The 2026 World Series of Poker officially kicks off on May 26 at Horseshoe and Paris Las Vegas, with 100 bracelet events running through July 15. Asian players looking to follow in Tang’s footsteps have plenty of opportunities on both the live and online circuits in the weeks ahead — including upcoming events on GGPoker and Natural8 that cater specifically to the APAC market.
