The MGM Poker Classic returns to MGM Cotai from June 26 to July 6, packing HK$13 million in guarantees into 20 events — and putting a HK$8 million guaranteed Main Event at the heart of the schedule. After years of a quieter post-pandemic stretch, the Cotai Strip is once again hosting series that can pull players from across Greater China and beyond.
The Main Event does the heavy lifting
That HK$8 million guarantee is most of the festival’s prize promise on its own, which tells you where the volume is expected. Macau Main Events have a habit of overshooting — the room sits inside one of the densest casino-resort clusters on earth, with a wealthy local and visiting player pool that treats a high-stakes felt as a weekend out. Around the marquee event, the remaining stops on the 20-event slate give satellites, side tournaments and shorter formats room to breathe across the eleven-day run.
Everything is denominated in Hong Kong dollars, the working currency of Macau poker, so players flying in from Hong Kong, the mainland and Southeast Asia can buy in without the FX friction that comes with US-dollar series elsewhere.
Why Cotai matters again
For the better part of a decade, Macau was the undisputed centre of high-stakes Asian poker before regulatory caution and travel disruption thinned the calendar. The territory’s gradual reopening has changed that. A festival of this size at MGM Cotai — one of the Strip’s flagship integrated resorts — signals that operators see the demand returning, and that Macau is comfortable hosting big guarantees again.
The timing is sharp, too. With the World Series still running in Las Vegas and a wave of summer festivals filling the Asian calendar — Jeju, Manila and Cambodia all have stops in the coming weeks — a Macau series gives regional players a marquee live option without the trans-Pacific flight. For grinders in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta, it is essentially a home game.
Doors open June 26. Expect the HK$8 million Main Event guarantee to be the figure everyone tracks once Day 1 flights get going — and a strong turnout here would be the clearest sign yet that Cotai’s poker scene is genuinely back.
