A poker straddle is a voluntary blind bet, usually twice the big blind, posted before the cards are dealt. It doubles the effective stakes for that hand and buys the straddler the last preflop action. On GGPoker and Natural8, straddles are allowed in cash games but never in tournaments. Most live rooms limit where you can straddle and how many re-straddles can stack up.

If you have sat down at a 25/50 peso game in Manila or a HKD table in Macau and watched three players toss in chips before a card hit the felt, you have seen straddles at work.

One Hand, Step by Step

Take a $1/$2 no-limit hold’em game. The small blind posts $1 and the big blind $2. The player under the gun (UTG), directly left of the big blind, chooses to post a $4 straddle before the deal.

  • Cards are dealt. Action starts with the player to the left of the straddler, not with UTG.
  • Anyone who wants to play must call $4, not $2. The minimum raise is now to $8.
  • When action reaches the straddler, they can check, raise, or fold. In effect they act as a third, larger big blind.
  • From the flop on, normal position applies again. The straddler is out of position against most of the table.

If the next player re-straddles, they post $8 and take over the last preflop action, then the next player can go to $16, and so on. Natural8’s own straddle guide gives exactly that $4 → $8 → $16 ladder for a $1/$2 game.

The Four Straddles You Will Meet

Type Who posts it Preflop action starts Where you see it
UTG straddle Player left of the big blind Seat left of the straddler The default almost everywhere
Button straddle Dealer button Usually UTG (in some rooms, the small blind) Popular in Asian and US live cash games
Mississippi straddle Any seat except the blinds Seat left of the straddler Looser house games
Sleeper straddle Any seat, posted in advance Only counts if action folds to that seat Rare; banned in many rooms

The button straddle is the one to watch: the straddler keeps position on every street.

Online: How GGPoker and Natural8 Handle It

GGNet, the network behind GGPoker and Natural8, built straddles into its client rather than leaving them to house custom. On regular hold’em cash tables you can switch a straddle option on, and the software then offers you the post before each hand while a short straddle timer runs. Pokerfuse’s breakdown of the feature covers GGPoker’s Ontario client. That version allows straddles from any seat, each one doubling the last, with no cap on how many can stack in one hand.

The same client also offers a no-look all-in: while the straddle timer is running you can shove your whole stack blind. Opponents can still re-straddle over it.

Three practical points for Asia-based players:

  • Tournaments never have straddles. MTTs, Spin & Gold and sit-and-gos use fixed blinds and antes.
  • Fast-fold pools are different. Rush & Cash moves you to a new table every hand, so there is no table culture of straddling to join. Check the table settings before assuming it’s available.
  • Rake follows the pot. Bigger preflop pots mean more hands reach the rake cap, so a table that straddles constantly costs everyone more over a session. Our rakeback guide explains how much of that you can win back.

Live Rooms Across Asia

Straddles are part of live cash poker in the region. Big games in Manila’s Entertainment City casinos and the Macau rooms often play with straddles most hands, and some private or high-stakes games make them mandatory. That means the posted stakes understate the real game. A “50/100” table with a standing straddle plays like 100/200 with a 50 small blind.

House rules differ, so ask the floor three things before you buy in: can you straddle from the button, is there a cap on re-straddles (two or three is common), and is a straddle ever mandatory? Rooms that also run bomb pots or let players run it twice tend to be the ones with loose straddle rules too.

Should You Straddle?

Usually not. You are paying double the big blind blind, with no information, from a seat that will be out of position after the flop. Even Natural8’s guide calls it “a losing play” in the long run. The cost only evens out when the whole table straddles in turn, because then everyone pays the same tax.

It makes sense in two narrow spots. One is a deep-stacked game full of loose players you are confident you outplay, where you want bigger pots. The other is a button straddle, which keeps position. Against a habitual straddler, tighten your calling range and raise the strong hands, because they rarely fold the extra chips.

Poker Straddle FAQ

Is a straddle the same as a raise?

No. A straddle is posted blind, before cards are dealt, and acts like an extra big blind. A raise is a voluntary action taken after you’ve seen your hand.

How much is a straddle in poker?

Normally twice the big blind, so $4 in a $1/$2 game. Each re-straddle usually doubles the previous one, though some live rooms allow larger amounts.

Can you straddle in poker tournaments?

No. Tournaments on GGPoker, Natural8 and at live series use fixed blinds and antes. Straddles are a cash-game feature only.

Who acts first after a straddle?

In a standard UTG straddle, the player to the left of the straddler acts first preflop and the straddler acts last. After the flop, normal order resumes.

Does GGPoker allow straddles?

Yes, on its regular cash game tables, through a straddle option in the client. Its Ontario site allows straddles from any seat with no cap on re-straddles, and also offers a no-look all-in.

What is a Mississippi straddle?

A straddle that can be posted from any seat except the blinds, commonly from the button. Preflop action starts with the player to the straddler’s left.

Is straddling profitable?

Not on its own. It means putting in double the big blind without seeing your cards. It only breaks even when everyone at the table straddles, or when you use it from the button against weaker players.
