Poker Superstitions (Poker Is, By All Means, A Game Of Skill)

Although some luck comes into play in poker, math and tons of logic gets utilized in order to figure out what hands you have available and determine what the odds are before formulating a perfect strategy.

The element of luck in poker is very real as well.

No matter how calculating you are as a player, you can experience bad luck with the hand that you are dealt which could make it difficult for you to win.

As smart as most professional players are, there are a good number of them who are superstitious players.

Players who believe in having a way of doing things on or before getting to the poker table.

In this article, we take a look at some poker superstitions that poker players would engage in.

Poker players with Lucky Card Protectors

This is by far the most popular poker superstition. Several players always have a particular object about them that they use as a lucky card protector.

It might be a chip from another casino where they won a huge tournament, a little figurine that means something to them, or anything else.

It’s not like these poker players believe their card protectors have magical abilities but having them at the table boosts their confidence, which is typically a positive thing.

Something that makes you feel better while playing while not negatively impacting other players can only be a good thing.

Some extremists may not even sit at the poker table to play if they do not have their card protector in hand which makes them look awkward.

Wearing the same clothes to play poker

Several of the top poker players are easily identified by their prominent and regular fashion choices.

In reality, it’s impossible to know if poker players wear the same outfits because of their superstitions or because it’s just their style.

But nothing prevents you from playing an entertaining game to figure it out – if you see a professional poker player wearing the same shirt or general clothing he wore when he won a poker tournament a decade ago, you can confidently assume he’s attempting to put himself in the identical circumstances to win big again.

Wearing “lucky clothes” one of the very common poker superstitions which applies to real life as well.

These poker players lend themselves to the old saying that wearing dirty clothes might help you get rid of bad luck.

In other sports, some players go so far as to never wash a jersey after winning a significant career competition.

Having a Lucky charm like a Lucky Poker Chip(s)

In the poker world, there is usually at least one poker player in most sets of people playing poker that others see as the lucky one or ones.

Winning chips from these lucky individuals has a special meaning for certain gamers.

They’ll frequently want to keep these chips as long as possible because they can bring them part of that good luck as well.

Most of the time, people don’t believe the joke (at least, I hope not), but it can generate a lot of amusing conversation at the tables.

If you believe in lucky players or lucky chips, then it is best that you do not allow the other players in the poker room know.

A poker player wearing red to play

Red denotes prosperity, riches, good fortune, and happiness in Chinese culture.

As you may know, brides wear red on their wedding day, money is handed in a red envelope during Chinese New Year, and some individuals choose to wear the same color to the casino to play poker games.

One interesting thing to note about red in the casino is that people are more likely to wager on red, which might be due to the color’s luck.

People also believe that the color red scares bad spirits away.

Stacking Chips in a particular way

The way some poker pros arrange their chips is highly significant to them. There will be players who only do stacks of 20, for example, or who never do stacks larger than 10, even though they are running out of felt space.

For some, this is simply a habit,

For others, it is much more than that since they feel the manner they stack their chips influences their results.

For the most part, this is one of the lighter poker superstitions but when a player insists on having mixed stacks because that is how they like it, it becomes an issue.

If you prefer to stack your chips, be sure your wish is in accordance with house regulations.

Never count your money while sitting at the poker table

This proverb comes from the ancient school of poker. Most players have surely heard Kenny Rogers’ popular song “The Gambler,”.

However, this statement sounds out of place for most current poker players. Rounders nowadays like to know where they stand in the game.

The belief was that a gambler who counted his money brought bad luck to his remaining time at the tables. But was there a deeper message there as well?

A player who is continually counting and recounting may be more concerned with the safety of his cash than with playing any cards.

In other words, know your budget, but don’t be afraid to experiment with it here and there.

Unlucky Hands

While most poker pros feel that no hand is lucky or bad luck on its own, many casuals who have been around for a while have hands they consider unlucky, such as the dead man’s hand.

This superstition generally originates from their recalling one or two embarrassing bad beats in the past.

The amusing aspect is that those who hold this concept often consider Aces and Kings, the most powerful beginning hands in Hold’em, to be extremely unlucky.

We’ve all had our pocket Aces busted a few times, but these guys can’t seem to get over it.

When they get these hands, they unconsciously play badly and lose with cards that could have given them a good chance to win.
