Da Nang is Vietnam’s poker festival city more than its cash-game city. Almost all the real action happens at tournament series held in the beachfront hotels along Võ Nguyên Giáp Street (Furama, Pullman, Crowne Plaza) and at a handful of licensed tournament clubs. Legal cash games are rare and only run inside foreigner-oriented casinos, so plan a trip around the festival calendar, not a random weekend.
That one fact changes how you should approach the city. Players who turn up expecting Manila-style 24/7 cash tables usually leave disappointed. Players who book around a festival week often find soft fields, cheap satellites and a beach 200 metres from the tournament floor.
Where the games actually run
Nearly every venue sits on the same 3 km strip of My Khe and Non Nuoc beach, so you can walk or take a short Grab between most of them.
- Crown International Club (Crowne Plaza Danang), 8 Võ Nguyên Giáp. The long-running casino in the city. Directory listings describe a small poker room of about two tables spreading No-Limit Hold’em, with blinds quoted from $1/2 up to $50/100 when high-stakes visitors are in town. In practice the bigger games are organised around events rather than dealt nightly. It also has a history of hosting Vietnam Poker Tour legs. - Furama Resort Da Nang, 105 Võ Nguyên Giáp. A conference-hall venue that has hosted several of the country’s biggest festivals. Nothing runs between series. During a series it is the busiest poker room in central Vietnam.
- Pullman Danang Beach Resort, 101 Võ Nguyên Giáp. Next door to Furama and used the same way: temporary tournament floors for touring series.
- Wyndham Danang Golden Bay. A large hotel across the river on the Son Tra side, used for international tournament weeks.
- Local tournament clubs. Dream Poker Club (in the Fivitel hotel on Trần Hưng Đạo), plus smaller rooms such as New Century and Platinum Poker Club. These run licensed daily tournaments under Vietnam’s “intellectual sport” framework, usually with modest buy-ins that suit expats and local regulars.
About 30–40 minutes south, towards Hoi An, is Hoiana Resort & Golf. It is the region’s big integrated casino, but its official casino page lists house-banked games such as Hoiana Stud Poker and Texas Hold’em Bonus Poker, not a player-vs-player poker room. You play those against the dealer, not other players. Hoiana does become relevant when a touring brand books it for a festival, and the Poker Dream series has been linked to the resort.
Why cash games are so scarce
Vietnam treats tournament poker and cash poker very differently. Clubs can run tournaments as a skill competition with a fixed entry fee. Real-money cash games count as gambling and are only allowed inside licensed casinos. Most of those casinos admit foreign passport holders only. A pilot programme lets some Vietnamese citizens play at designated casinos (Corona in Phu Quoc is the best-known one), but it has strict income and age rules and doesn’t turn Da Nang’s city clubs into cash rooms.
What this means for you:
- If a city club offers you a “private cash game”, walk away. It sits outside the legal framework and you have no protection if something goes wrong.
- Tournament prizes over the tax threshold are generally subject to Vietnam’s roughly 10% personal income tax, which is usually withheld at payout. Ask the tournament desk before you register.
- Carry your original passport. Photocopies are routinely refused at casino doors.
Timing a trip: the festival calendar
The U Series of Poker (USOP) has treated Da Nang as a home base, with multi-week festivals and guarantees in the billions of dong. A few practical rules from past series:
- Main events fill on the final flight. The last Day 1 is often the biggest. If you’re only in town for a long weekend, aim for that flight.
- Side events are the value. Turbo and deepstack side events in the VND 2–5 million range get the most recreational players.
- Satellites run online as well as live. Organisers often run feeder qualifiers on GGNetwork skins such as Natural8, which is much cheaper than buying in directly.
